'It was like the ref had a brand new set of cards and wanted to see if they worked properly' Richard Rufus [para]

Taunton CS A started their existence with a goal. Following a messy scrum in East Devon's D, the ball was blocked by a foot on the goal line. Although Bill Horner was quick to tap in the rebound, the goal was disallowed as the whistle had blown. A penalty flick was awarded and captain Andy Carter found the net.

Following the goal, Taunton settled into their stride and played some solid hockey. Devon began to come back and enjoyed some success, winning a couple of short corners. Although the first was defended successfully, during the second a low strike from the top of the D took a deflection off Julian Brown's stick and found the back of the net.

Still, the visitors kept their heads up and retained their composure. Although they were tested several more times, it was Taunton who took the lead with a goal from debutant Sam Woodland. At the end of the half, East Devon won a long succession of short corners, all of which were defended, including a stop on the line from Karl Patrick.

The second half began with another goal scored from a short corner, once again from East Devon. This gave them confidence and the home side began to exert pressure. The teams had already been instructed to keep their cool, but tensions were beginning to rise. East Devon scored another, this from open play during a 2 on 1 as the ball was passed across the D and the defender was unable to block it. In response, Bill Horner scored a fine goal from the far post against his old club in his first game for Taunton in several years.

Although the teams were level, Devon once more won a series of short corners and following a fourth goal, some members of the Taunton CS expressed their disappointment. This quickly reached boiling point as Dan Adams vigorously disagreed with one of the umpires and was given a yellow card. As Dan walked away, he was called back by the umpire who disagreed with something he had said. This time when Dan walked. It was with a red card.

Down to ten men, Taunton struggled in the final quarter. The team pulled together and defended well but the keeper was forced to make several saves. Ultimately, Devon would score again to win 5 3, but Taunton continued to counter attack until the final whistle.

Midfielder James Coles was elected man of the match and Dan Adams was unanimously voted dick of the day.
